Types of truck engines
The commonly used engines for trucks are mainly diesel engines (some light trucks may use gasoline engines or new energy power), for the following reasons:
Diesel engines have high torque and are suitable for heavy-duty truck needs. They can output high torque at low speeds, making it easy to start and climb hills.
Good fuel economy, high calorific value and thermal efficiency of diesel (up to 40% or more), making long-distance transportation more fuel-efficient.
Strong reliability, simple and durable structure, suitable for harsh working conditions.
The core components of truck diesel engines
1. The crank connecting rod mechanism converts the thermal energy of fuel combustion into mechanical energy.
Key components:
Cylinder block and cylinder head: form the combustion chamber and withstand high temperature and pressure.
Piston: It moves back and forth in the cylinder, driving the crankshaft to rotate through the piston connecting rod.
Crankshaft: converts the linear motion of the piston into rotational motion and outputs power.
Flywheel: stores energy to ensure smooth rotation of the crankshaft.
2. Valve system controls the intake and exhaust processes of the cylinder.
Key components:
Intake/exhaust valves: timed opening/closing, intake air (diesel engine) or mixture (gasoline engine), exhaust gas.
Camshaft and valve tappet: By driving the valve movement through the cam, precise valve timing is achieved (such as "early intake opening, late exhaust closing").
Timing gear/chain: Connect the crankshaft and camshaft to ensure that their speeds match (the speed ratio between the crankshaft and camshaft of a diesel engine is generally 2:1).
3. Fuel supply system
Function: To deliver high-pressure diesel into the cylinder and atomize it for combustion.
Key components:
Diesel tank: stores fuel.
Fuel transfer pump: delivers fuel from the fuel tank to the fuel filter.
Fuel filter: filters impurities to ensure clean fuel.
Fuel injection pump (high-pressure fuel pump): pressurizes the fuel to above 100MPa (modern common rail systems can reach 200MPa+).
Injector: Inject high-pressure fuel into the combustion chamber through atomization and mix with air for combustion.
Common rail system (core technology of modern diesel engines):
The high-pressure fuel pump delivers fuel to the common rail (accumulator), and the injection timing, pressure, and quantity are precisely controlled by the ECU (electronic control unit) to achieve efficient combustion and low emissions.
